The baby sleep industry has popularized TOG ratings—a measure of thermal resistance originally developed for duvets—as the definitive guide to sleep layering. While TOG ratings provide a useful starting framework, they tell an incomplete story, because they measure only one dimension of thermal performance: insulation. They do not measure breathability, moisture wicking, or airflow—the three properties that actually determine whether your baby overheats.
A 1.0 TOG polyester sleep sack and a 1.0 TOG cotton muslin swaddle have theoretically identical insulation values. But in practice, the polyester traps moisture against the skin while the muslin allows continuous evaporative cooling. The baby in the polyester overheats. The baby in the muslin sleeps comfortably. The TOG rating cannot capture this difference because it was never designed to.

The more useful mental model is to think about fabric architecture. An open-weave muslin has gaps between its threads that function as ventilation channels. Summer Layering: The Art of Almost Nothing
Summer is when the overheating risk is highest, and it is also when parents most frequently make the mistake of adding too much. The instinct to wrap and protect is powerful—but in temperatures above 75°F (24°C), the greatest protection you can offer your baby is the absence of excessive covering.
The summer sleep formula is elegantly simple:
- Room temperature 75°F+ (24°C+): A single layer. Either a short-sleeved cotton bodysuit alone, or a lightweight muslin swaddle over a diaper only. Never both.
- Room temperature 72–75°F (22–24°C): A short-sleeved cotton bodysuit under a single-layer muslin swaddle. The muslin provides the gentle pressure of swaddling without adding meaningful warmth.
- The fan test: If you have a ceiling fan or portable fan circulating air in the nursery (which the AAP recommends as a SIDS risk reduction measure), you can use the slightly warmer layering option even in higher temperatures.

The critical fabric decision in summer is the weave, not the weight. A muslin with an open plain weave will perform dramatically better than a dense cotton of identical weight. The open weave allows continuous passive heat exchange—your baby radiates warmth through the fabric rather than having it reflected back against their skin.
Signs that your baby is too hot during summer sleep: flushed or red cheeks, damp hair at the nape of the neck, rapid breathing, a hot chest or back when you place your hand under the swaddle. Winter Layering: Warmth Without the Weight
Winter is when families in northern climates face the highest temptation to add fleece, down, and heavy synthetic blankets to the crib. This temptation must be resisted absolutely. The AAP's safe sleep guidelines have not changed: the crib should contain a firm mattress, a fitted sheet, and the baby—swaddled or in a wearable blanket. No loose blankets. Every parent should learn this technique, because it eliminates guesswork entirely and takes less time than checking your phone:
Place two fingers flat against your baby's chest, between the nipples. The skin should feel warm and dry. Not hot. Not damp. Not cool. Warm and dry. That is the target.
- Hot and damp: Remove a layer immediately. Open a window or turn on a fan. Check again in 15 minutes.
- Warm and dry: Perfect. Change nothing.
- Cool to the touch: Add a layer. If the baby is in a single-layer swaddle, switch to a double-layer or add a bodysuit beneath.
- Cold: Add layers and increase room temperature. Monitor closely for the next hour.
Do this check at every nighttime feeding or wake-up. It becomes second nature within a week and provides more accurate information than any wearable baby temperature monitor on the market—because you are feeling the actual skin temperature, not a proxy measurement filtered through an algorithm.
